AQUASCAPE | Connecting People to Water
02/10/2023
Where and how Aquascape began...
Aquascape Inc. was created in 1991 by owner and CEO Greg Wittstock, also known as "The Pond Guy", when he began building ponds around Chicago during breaks in the school year. The Aquascape ethos is to connect people to water, whilst working with nature instead of fighting against it. Aquascape pond systems utilise the natural bacterial processes within ponds to keep the water healthy and crystal clear, often incorporating water courses and rockways to imitate the positive impact of a natural stream.
We were very excited to start working with Aquascape and bringing their products and concept to the UK market. In February 2023, Sam and Chris flew out to Chicago to meet the team and visit Aquascape HQ, officially know as Aqualand: A Workplace Utopia. The rest as they say, is history.
Standout moments from their time at Aqualand...
From Chris: “Watching the team demo the installation of the system. They took a hole in the ground and within 4 hours they had not only built a pond, they had created a fully functional ecosystem complete with, rocks and plants. They did all this whilst talking through the installation of the Aquascape products and showing us how simple it was, allowing them the time to focus on the actual design of the environment around it.”
From Sam: “The products and systems are undoubtedly brilliant but the most impressive point for me was the consistency of company ethos. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed it was obvious that Aquascape is about much more than products. Other companies should take a good look at their set-up it’s impressive, I returned with some amazing ideas for Landscapeplus.”
What separates Aquascape...
Aquascape products focus on delivering a high end system, with a simple installation. This simplistic approach allows the installers to focus more on designing a beautiful aquatic landscape and spend less time on the install. All their systems can be hidden within the rocks and plants creating the illusion that these aquatic environments have been formed by mother nature herself. The use of materials, such as: moss, driftwood and boulders of varying sizes truly capture the essence of the natural world and reinforce the Aquascape ethos of 'connecting people to water the way nature intended'.
Aquascape's patented ecosystem approach to designing, building, and maintaining water features relies on a natural balance of circulation, filtration, plants, fish, rocks and gravel to ensure sustainability.
Here are just some of the benefits of using an Aquascape system:
- The low-maintenance ecosystem ponds are designed to self regulate, with minimal interference.
- A commitment to the environment and ensuring all their products work together to give back more than they take from any ecosystem.
- Premium products in consumer-friendly packaging with complete installation instructions.
- Ongoing field testing and research development to bring the best quality products to market.
- Residential and commercial applications are available, from the smallest container water garden to the most advanced recreational water feature.
Aquascape in the UK...
We are thrilled to see how Aquascape is growing in the UK and proudly support a thriving network of Aquascape installers across the country. Our relationship with them allows us to learn and grow together, something we think Greg and the Aquascape team in Chicago would be proud of. Dan from DU Waterscapes and Jon from Davis Pondscapes have been huge advocates for some time now and visited us in August 2023 to pass on their wisdom of everything Aquascape. It was the perfect opportunity for an in-house training session for our team and for them to share some of their incredible work with us.
Don't just take our word...
"Aquascape is the reason that DU Waterscapes was born. After seeing an inspirational documentary about their revolutionary, yet back to nature systems, over 8 years ago, Dan saw a way he could finally apply his Masters in Freshwater Habitats to the domestic market. Natural freshwater ponds are on the decline and yet provide such a biodiverse and high density habitat which is why having a pond in your garden is one of the best things you can do to protect our British fauna. By using Aquascapes' back to nature approach with their simple components and informative and proactive team behind the scenes, they are quickly becoming a market leader worldwide. They've shaken up the USA and now change is coming to the UK too with people realising that black bare liners and green water isn't what a pond should look like."
