Top Tips for Designing a Perfect Automated Lighting System

01/09/2022

Despite the huge role lighting has in our everyday lives, many don't consider or perhaps are unaware of the controlling options that are available for these systems.  Technology has evolved far beyond the times of an on-off switch and lighting systems can now be fully automated, or they can connect to a wireless control or device like a smartphone. Controlling lighting systems remotely, has a whole host of benefits like energy and cost savings, convenience and more.  So, when designing a lighting scheme, why let the client settle for a simple light switch when you could offer a wireless remote control with a whole host of switching and sensor options.

When it comes to specifying these systems, you may think that it would be a lengthy and complicated process.  But you couldn't be more wrong.  Choosing the best system for your client is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

1) Identify how many lighting zones you need. Why have all of the lights on at once when you can split the scheme into switched zones to create different moods and atmospheres. You could also split the scheme into practical lighting (steps, seating areas etc.) and then aesthetic lighting for a great view of the garden at night.

2) Once you have identified the number of zones, determine whether your client would prefer a dimmable or non-dimmable system.

3) Choose how you want to switch your system. Manual Switching – choose from a key fob, dimmable handheld remote, simple wall switch, smartphone app or a combination that suits your client's needs. Automatic Switching – this is where a remote-control system really pays off.  Choose from PIR, driveway sensors or even a timer that will adjust with the sunset to automate the system and make great lighting effortless for your client.

Key benefits…

When a whole lighting scheme is switched on at once, a highlighted feature can lose its moment of magic.  So, having your lighting set up in separate zones can enable your client to locally turn on specific areas and highlight individual features within the garden, keeping practical lighting only for when it’s needed.

It makes it incredibly easy for your client. By having the system as automated as possible it will ensure your client gets the benefits and enjoyments of their garden for years to come.

You can keep the environmental impact of your designs to a minimum. A well-planned (and switched!) lighting system will not only look great but will help limit the impact on wildlife. We always suggest an ‘all off’ feature if the lighting system is set up on a timer, to ensure the hours of darkness… stay dark! You can also reduce running costs by having an LED system, zoned and timed so that the system is only used when it is needed.
